The Makings Of A Perfect Garage Bar

without comments

wooden-barstoolI’ve been trying to set up this dream bar of mine since I was a teenager. It’s one of those spaghetti western movies that did it for me, I’m pretty sure.

Just think about it – Clint Eastwood or some other cool as cucumber cowboy striding up to those dusty swing boards, swaggering over to the bar as all the patrons take a good look at him. He’s not fazed. He knows they’re no match for his skills should he get into a duel. And boy do they get into duels a lot. And for petty reasons, too.

But that’s not the point. I just love the whole atmosphere it gives off. Inside there, it’s a different world. A man’s world, really. So I decided for my next summer project to set up a garage bar. Nothing fancy in one of those commercial spaces, that will just be too much work, not to mention the money it will take.

I want it to have that western saloon theme, of course. So it has to have wooden fixtures. I made the bar out of old wooden cargo boxes collecting dust in my attic, and the leftover paneling from when this house was being built I fashioned into that swinging door look.

It took a lot of sawing and carving, and I think the shape turned out fine. Just the shape, though. I’m still figuring out where to attach it so I’m not quite finished yet.

I had the tables and chairs already set up, a two-set that I got from Etsy. They had this authentic saloon look, knocked up and colored just about right, and I just immediately fell for them. Now the problem is which accessory and design I should go for.

te843I would always find in the movies these different beer mugs, or bottles of wine and whiskey behind the bar. But I wanted something different.

Now, I don’t have my own shot glass collection, but when my girlfriend suggested it as a centerpiece for the bar, I suddenly wished I had. She saw an example picture from one of her travels, and I instantly liked it.

I bought a set off online, a modest vintage collection that was on clearance. It was mot much, but it needed a display case all the same.

I tried to find a case online again, and came across this shot glass case site.  It had cool review in it and different styles. In the end, I picked up this octagonal shaped hardwood case. It looked unique and western-ish at the same time.

I’m thinking of finishing this project by the end of the week and invite the boys for some opening party drinks. I’m toying with the idea of opening this to the neighborhood as well. That could be very fun.

Why That Small Upright Freezer Better Be Good

without comments

Small upright freezers can be a godsend especially for hoarders like me, so after looking into this small upright freezer website (basically freezer paradise and with good deals too) I ordered a nice looking one right away. It has 3 shelvings and adjustable wire shelves, and I liked the interior – very clean and concise in design. My meat provisions will definitely be in the clutter free zone. Plus I’m trying to get to change my eating habits as well, which will involve large quantities of chicken, so this will help.

haier17-2I ordered one with wheels just in case. I’m a hoarder not for simple reasons, though. I enjoy the survivalist’s life, and I’m trying to stockpile as much as I can before any big catastrophe happens. Canned goods definitely, but some fresh meat is good as well thus the small upright freezer I ordered. I had it delivered to my log cabin with an underground bunk in El Paso, so I’ll have to take a visit there again soon. It should be nice after all the spring break noise and nonsense, a forest and a particular sunny clearing with a nearby stream should be able to expunge all this.

Another reason of mine is to take advantage of sales as well, as it can’t get any better than buying up half priced goods and storing them for the lean years of whatever national disaster might happen. I’m not too keen on having to scavenge with a group of half-dead crows. I learned too much from TV to have the sense to keep away from such.

Then there’s the looming north Korean trip as well, where I’m going to be a tour guide for a year and a half. It’s really interesting, as I have been back and forth to that country since my naval days, and now they finally accepted my application. It’s a beautiful country with beautiful people, rising up from their poverty despite the cult-ish horrors some of the people experience, especially those in the famine stricken countryside. My heart goes out to all of them, and I can’t wait to see my Nokor friends this year.

That’s all for now. Hopefully, when the freezer arrives, there will be enough time for me to stockpile it in full before the Nokor trip.

Picking Kitchen Equipment, The After Essentials

without comments

There are a few key items that must be present in any kitchen, namely, a refrigerator, a stove, a sink, pots and pans, and cooking utensils. These are what I like to call “the essentials”, everything after that is an add-on.

Listed here is what I like to call the must-have add-ons. They are some kitchen materials that is just a little short of being considered essential.

delissio-microcartIf you are looking to have more than the bare necessities the very first thing to consider would be getting a preparation table. Even though it initially takes up a lot of space it makes the kitchen feel much more spacious. It helps you become more organized and composed while cooking.

Another piece of equipment that I highly recommend would be a dishwasher. I know it doesn’t help you cook but if you hate doing the dishes like me then you will find this incredibly useful.

A microwave is the most practical and convenient kitchen device available. Because of its multi-functionality it is useful in almost any household. However, a microwave unlike the other add-ons I’ve listed requires a stand to become operational. This is why this must-have of an add-on should be bought with a microwave cart, a rather small usually rectangular trolley which is commonly used as a surface for placement of a microwave.

A microwave cart can serve as storage space for some kitchen tools and wares. It comes in different designs and will complement strongly the next must-have add-on to a kitchen and that is theme, style, or décor. The organization and flow of a kitchen is heavily influenced by its motif as that is what composes the surroundings. Some of these microwave cart designs like those at http://EMicrowavecart.com, are good examples of how you can build a motif for your kitchen. Once you have your motif it is then essential to surround your kitchen with more equipment that complements the theme or style.

When you have secured the four must-have add-ons it is time for you to find your own direction. They say that a kitchen reflects the chef, so it’s a good idea to make sure your kitchen makes an excellent first impression.

Things To Look For When Picking A TV Stand

without comments

lgoakstand

Ever since the TV was invented it has always come with a stand, whether it was built in like in the old days or sold separately like it is now. Deciding what kind of stand is important in maximizing the aesthetic quality of both your room and your TV. Now, the perfect stand may differ from one set to another based on the theme of the room and type of TV that you have but as a rule, wooden stands tend to be the better option.

Before you go out and look for the perfect TV stand, you have to figure out what role does the TV play in your room. Is it the centerpiece? Is the TV going to sit in a corner? Is it for a gaming room? Is it for the living room? The answer to this question will help you decide on the structure of your TV stand (lengthy, triangular, square, etc). Let’s say you want to showcase your TV then the best option would be to go with a wide rectangular TV stand with warm Oak finish.

If you’re looking around for a wooden stand for your TV, then start with Oak. The next step would be choosing whether you want your stand to incorporate some glass into the main frame, use the site as a reference. The addition of glass adds a bit of elegance to the piece which can be a good touch depending on where it’ll be placed. Remember though, a solid wooden stand can offer a more antique and/or masculine appeal depending on the finish of the piece.

The next thing to consider would be to have drawers on your TV stand or not. Few people consider this but drawers on your stand means that there will be people looking through them maybe even while you’re watching. Before making this decision consider the fact that leaving your TV stand compartments open turns them into a wonderful display case that is still capable of housing your remote and other TV accessories (DVD, VCD, game console, etc.) If you are still having a hard time deciding try looking at some of these classy oak TV stands from www.eOakTVstands.com, it really helped me figure out what I wanted.

Last and most important thing you need to remember is to visualize your TV and stand in its place before making any final decisions.
